How Lighting Control Transforms the Feel of a Room

·Beyond Audio Editorial

Lighting is the most emotionally powerful element of interior design. It is more immediately felt than color, more impactful than furniture, and more variable than almost anything else in a room. Lighting control — the ability to set any light to any level and recall specific combinations with a single command — changes how you experience the spaces you live in.

Scenes versus switches

A standard light switch has two states: on and off. Lighting control has scenes — named, saved combinations of light levels across multiple fixtures that can be recalled instantly. "Dinner" dims the pendants over the table, drops the perimeter lighting, and raises the backlight behind the bar. "Morning" brings the kitchen to full bright and leaves the adjacent great room at a gentle ambient level. "Movie" drops everything except a soft floor wash.

The difference between living with scenes and living with switches is the difference between setting exactly the right mood effortlessly and adjusting six switches to approximate what you wanted while the food gets cold.

Circadian and health applications

Color temperature — the warmth or coolness of light — affects alertness and sleep. Cool, blue-toned light at 5,000 to 6,500 Kelvin promotes alertness. Warm, amber-toned light at 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin promotes relaxation and sleep. Lutron's Ketra tunable-white fixtures allow the system to shift color temperature throughout the day — bright and cool in the morning, warm and dim by evening — automatically, without any manual adjustment. This is not a marketing concept; it has measurable effects on circadian rhythm and sleep quality.

Integration with the rest of the home

In a Control4 or Crestron system, lighting scenes participate in whole-home automation. The "Good Night" scene that you trigger from a keypad by your bed does not just turn off the bedroom lights — it confirms all exterior doors are locked, sets the thermostat to sleep temperature, lowers the shades in the master suite, and turns off every light in the house that you left on. One button, complete result.

The design conversation

Lutron Homeworks works with any fixture — LED, halogen, fluorescent, low-voltage. The selection of fixtures, their placement, and the layering of ambient, task, and accent light is a design conversation between the interior designer, the lighting designer, and the integrator. The control system gives all of that design intention the ability to be expressed at the appropriate moment.
