How to Evaluate an AV Company Before You Hire Them
The luxury AV market has many participants at different capability levels. A company that can competently install a television and a soundbar is not the same as a company capable of engineering a whole-home Control4 system with distributed audio, theater, lighting control, and networking. Identifying the difference before you commit is critical.
Look at completed projects, not renderings
Any company can produce attractive system designs and project proposals. The question is execution. Ask to see completed installations — ideally in homes with comparable scope and complexity to yours. If possible, speak with the homeowner directly. Ask specifically about the commissioning process, how issues were resolved, and how responsive the company has been after installation.
Verify manufacturer relationships
Elite dealer status with Control4, Crestron, or Lutron is not easily obtained. It requires installation volume, trained staff, certified programmers, and passing manufacturer audits. Companies at elite dealer tiers have access to advanced technical support, firmware previews, and manufacturer attention that lower-tier dealers do not. Ask specifically about their dealer tier with the platforms they are recommending for your project.
Meet the programming team
The programmer who will configure your home automation system is as important as the equipment they configure. Ask to meet them. Ask how many systems of comparable size they have programmed. Ask about their certification level. Programming is where most luxury system disappointments originate — either because the programmer was insufficiently experienced, or because insufficient time was allocated to programming in the project timeline and budget.
Evaluate the equipment room proposal
The equipment room design tells you a great deal about a company's standards. A rack design with clearly labeled wire runs, proper cable management, ventilation planning, and logical device organization reflects a company that cares about how systems are built, not just how they look at handover. Ask to see photos of their equipment room work.
Understand the service model
What happens after installation? How do they handle service requests — phone, email, remote access? What is the typical response time? Is there a service agreement, and what does it include? A company that is difficult to reach after the check clears is a company that has already moved on to the next project.
The right company answers all of these questions confidently and with specifics. Vague answers and defensive responses are meaningful signals.
