What to Ask Your AV Integrator Before Signing a Contract
Choosing an AV integrator is not like choosing a contractor for tile work. A bad tile job is visible and fixable. A bad AV installation hides inside your walls, under your floors, and inside equipment rooms — and it can take years for the problems to surface. By then, the company may be gone.
Before you sign anything, ask these questions.
How long have you been in business?
Longevity matters in this industry. Technology changes fast, and companies that survive multiple technology cycles have earned it. Beyond Audio has been doing this since 1995. That means we have installed systems across multiple generations of Control4, Crestron, and Lutron — and we are still here to support every one of them.
Do you employ your own programmers?
Many companies install the hardware and outsource the programming. That means a third party you have never met is configuring the brain of your home. Ask specifically whether programming is done in-house and by whom. Better yet, ask to meet the programmer who will work on your project.
What brands do you use, and why?
Any integrator worth hiring should be able to explain their brand choices without hesitation. If the answer is "whatever the client wants," that is a red flag. Top integrators have preferred platforms because they have tested them, trained on them, and staked their reputation on them. Ask about their relationship with those manufacturers — dealer tier, certifications, and access to technical support.
Can I see a reference install?
A showroom tells you what they sell. A reference install tells you how they work. Ask to visit a completed project, ideally in a home similar to yours in size and scope. Pay attention to how the equipment is mounted, how cable runs are managed, and how clean the equipment room looks.
What does your service agreement include?
Installation is the beginning, not the end. Technology needs monitoring, updating, and occasional troubleshooting. Ask how fast they respond to service calls, whether they offer remote diagnostics, and what happens if a product is discontinued. A five-year-old system should still have someone who knows how to support it.
Who owns the programming?
This is the question most clients forget to ask. Some integrators lock your programming so that no other company can access or modify it. If they go out of business or you want to switch, you may have to start over. Ask for a written commitment that you own your system configuration.
The right integrator welcomes these questions. They have answers ready because they have earned them. If someone gets defensive, take note.
