Outdoor AV: Extending the Experience Beyond Your Walls

Arizona's climate is one of its most compelling features. Scottsdale homes are built around outdoor living — pools, covered patios, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and landscaped grounds that function as exterior rooms. The audio and video systems in those exterior spaces deserve the same level of consideration as the systems inside.

The outdoor environment is harder than it looks

Outdoor audio faces challenges that interior installations do not. Temperature swings in the Arizona desert can exceed 60 degrees Fahrenheit between summer midday and winter night. UV exposure degrades materials. Dust, moisture, and insects find their way into everything. Wind and ambient noise compete with the audio.

Equipment specified for outdoor use must be rated for these conditions. Marine-grade speakers, UV-stabilized enclosures, and weatherproof amplification are not optional. Consumer audio equipment that happens to be placed outside will fail. Purpose-built outdoor equipment will not.

Coverage, not volume

Outdoor audio design is about even coverage rather than raw output. The goal is a consistent listening level throughout the space — pool deck, seating area, outdoor kitchen — without a "hot spot" near a speaker and silence away from it. This requires more speakers at lower individual volumes rather than fewer speakers pushed hard.

Landscape speakers blend into hardscaping. In-wall and in-ceiling speakers under covered patios disappear into the structure. Rock-shaped satellite speakers handle areas where traditional enclosures would look out of place. The result is a space that sounds like music is simply in the air, rather than coming from specific objects.

Outdoor video
